Minimnya jalan dan sistem transportasi di ibu kota menjadikan Jakarta sebagai kota termacet di Indonesia. Dilansir dari Kompas, berdasarkan riset berjudul Inrix 2017 Traffic Sorecard menemukan bahwa Jakarta berada pada peringkat 12 dalam daftar kota termacet di Indonesia. Tentunya hal ini bukan merupakan prestasi yang membanggakan bagi Indonesia. Untuk mengurangi kepadatan kendaraan diharapkan masyarakat Jakarta dapat mengurangi penggunaan kendaraan pribadi dan beralih ke transportasi massal. Dengan adanya MRT bisa menurunkan waktu tempuh mulai 1-2 jam antara Lebak Bulus hinggga Bundaran HI menjadi 30 menit. Penurunan waktu tempuh akan meningkatkan mobilitas dan kualitas hidup masyarakat Jakarta.
Butuh waktu lama untuk Indonesia memiliki transportasi modern seperti Mass Rapid Transit (MRT). Tepat pada 24 Maret 2019, MRT diresmikan oleh presiden Joko Widodo. Pembagunan MRT ini didanai melalui pinjaman dari Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) yang kemudian bergabung ke dalam Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) dan menelan biaya sekitar Rp 16 triliun. Pinjaman kepada Jepang memiliki grace periode 10 tahun dan masa pembayaran utang selama 30 tahun.
Masyarakat Indonesia bukan merupakan masyarakat yang terbiasa oleh perubahan, namun bisa dikatakan bahwa masyarakat Indonesia selalu terbawa oleh kebiasaan. Aturan-aturan yang dikeluarkan dalam penggunaan MRT menjadi tantangan sendiri bagi pemerintah agar masyarakat terbiasa dengan penggunaan transportasi modern. Sejumlah gambar yang menunjukkan masyarakat yang duduk di lantai sembari makan dan minum serta foto ibu-ibu bergelantungan di dalam MRT sempat viral di media sosial beberapa hari lalu. Masyarakat perlu mendapatkan sosialisasi yang sangat matang dari pemerintah mengenai MRT beserta tujuh larangan ketika naik MRT yang telah ditetapkan oleh manajemen.
Transportasi modern berbentuk MRT ini merupakan ide yang bagus. Namun yang ditakutkan adalah eksistensi penggunaan MRT hanya pada awal kemunculan MRT. Meskipun menjanjikan waktu tempuh yang lebih cepat, MRT mematok harga sebesar Rp. 10.000 per kilometer yang dianggap terlalu mahal jika dibandingkan dengan moda transportasi yang lainnya seperti KRL. Selain itu MRT juga diperdiksi tidak akan mengurangi kemacetan secara signifikan di ibu kota Jakarta. Hal ini disebabkan karena titik pemberhentian MRT masih terbatas. Selain itu titik pemberhentian MRT masih jauh dengan area publik. Apalagi budaya masyarakat Indonesia yang tidak suka berjalan kaki, sehingga bisa saja masyarakat lebih memilih ojek online karena dapat mengantarkan mereka langsung pada tempat tujuan tanpa harus berjalan kaki lagi setelah naik tranportasi umum.
Indonesia bukan hanyalah Jakarta. Kemajuan Indonesia tidak hanya diukur dari kesamaan dengan negara lain dalam hal pembangunan infrastruktur seperti MRT. MRT bukan satu-satunya tolak ukur negara maju. Transportasi di Jakarta pun telah memumpuni sebelum adanya MRT. Perbaikan terhadap infrastruktur yang telah ada disertai dengan sosialisasi budaya Indonesia untuk terbiasa menggunakan transportasi online akan menjadi lebih baik agar perekonomian Indonesia benar-benar dapat ditingkatkan. Pulau Jawa sudah mengenal transportasi modern seperti MRT, namun bagaimana dengan pulau lainnya seperti Pulau Sulawesi yang masih belum ada kereta api?
